تشكل الأسرة نسقا اجتماعيا محددا من الأدوار والمكانات والوظائف، شأنها في ذلك شأن أي نسق آخر من أنساق المجتمع، حيث يختلف بناء القوة فيها من مجتمع إلى آخر باختلاف درجة التحضر.

ويتوقف نجاح الأسرة أو فشلها كوحدة زواجية إلى حد كبير على توزيع القوة فيها، لأنها المحرك الرئيس لشتى أنواع النشاطات والتفاعلات الاجتماعية داخلها وخارجها. لذا تعتبر القوة التي يملكها كل عضو من أعضاء الأسرة خاصة الزوجين في اتخاذ القرارات المصيرية في حياة الأسرة، دليلا وانعكاسا واضحا لقوة أو ضعف الدور الذي يمارسه كل فرد فيها.
